Arriving from Nepal to Dubai was a bit surreal, as if we got to a different planet altogether. Jumping from abject poverty to super-rich luxury felt strange. You couldn’t even compare the Dubai airport to that of Kathamandu’s. The taxi we took from the airport was massive, air-conditioned, automatic whereas in Kathmandu we could hardly fit into the taxis with our backpacks. We had booked about the cheapest hotel we could find on the Internet (this time we didn’t fancy staying in Burj al-Arab, ha ha) which cost about 50 pound a night. It was actually an apartment with a bedroom, kitchen, living room and two bathrooms – we were walking around this enormous place overwhelmed, while saying “it’s almost like the guest houses in Nepal!” Unfortunately we arrived late Saturday night and the next flight was early Monday morning so we only had one day in Dubai – not much time to enjoy the facilities of the hotel, such as the pool and the gym.

We had a desert safari booked for the afternoon so in the morning we headed out to see the famous buildings: Burj al Arab (the reputedly best hotel in the world with 7 stars) and Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Even in mid-October the heat was oppressive – I don’t even want to imagine how it would be in August when the temperature soars to 50 degrees. It was a short walk from the hotel to the closest metro stop but still it was enough of sweating; I’m not a fan of air-conditioning in general but here it’s an absolute must. The distances were a lot longer than we thought and it took us a good 45 minutes on the metro to get to the stop we imagined was within walking distance from Burj al Arab. Keyword here being “imagined”. We could see the sail-shaped tower as soon as stepping out of the metro so it seemed simple enough to start walking that way. However, it was like a mirage in a desert; we kept walking and walking in the sweltering heat but the hotel didn’t seem to get any closer. All the streets we were following turned out to be dead ends and we had to keep turning this and that way, trying to keep heading towards the hotel. Walking outside is clearly not a favourite pastime for the locals as we were the only mad people on the streets – just luxury cars were passing by but no walkers. Finally we encountered somebody to ask for advice and she told us to go to the beach nearby the hotel where you have the best spot for pictures. Obviously we couldn’t get anywhere near the hotel itself anyway as they have very tight security. Finally after nearly an hour’s walk we made it to the beach and got the pictures we wanted – no time to be lying on the beach though as we needed to head to Burj Khalifa next.

To visit Burj Khalifa you needed to book a time and pay the entrance fee (about 20 pounds) online. We had our time booked for 12noon and we were already in a hurry, so we had to get a taxi instead of walking another hour back to the metro stop. The tower is located in Dubai mall which was a sight worth seeing in itself – probably the biggest shopping centre I have ever seen full of all sorts of luxury shops. It was all modern, gleaming, bling and luxury. We are not really into shopping in general, and especially not with this budget, but it was kind of interesting to see this shopping paradise. The tower of Burj Khalifa is 828m high and the viewing point is on floor 124 (there are still loads of floors above the viewing point). That was quite a view – from there you can really see that Dubai was basically built out of nothing in the middle of the desert. It was amazing to see skyscrapers and fountains one way and then just sand and vast emptiness the other way.

We took our time admiring the views and taking pictures, but then it was already time to rush back to the hotel as our pick-up for the desert safari was at 3pm. We got into the jeep and first drove around picking up other people from other hotels, altogether it was six customers and the driver. The programme was to drive out to the desert where we would do “dune bashing” (driving around the sand dunes in rally style), then drive to a desert camp where dinner would be served and you can do other programmes like camel riding, get a henna tattoo, smoke shisha (water pipe) and watch dance shows. It was a pure tourist show but we enjoyed it all the same. Dune bashing was really fun but luckily it didn’t last too long; I’m sure fun would have turned into nausea in no time. Also the scenery was incredible – even though we have been to other deserts before, this was the first one that looked like desert is supposed to look like in my head: gorgeous red sand dunes as far as the eye could see, absolutely stunning.
We skipped camel riding as we have done it before in many places but we did get henna tattoos on our hands and tried the shisha as well. The food was great and plentiful with more vegan options than I could eat. I also liked the dance show, the belly dancer was awesome. We got back to the hotel around 9pm and despite our good intentions didn’t have the energy to go and see Dubai by night – another early flight awaited us the following day.

Seuraavaksi Sydney, Australia!

The funny thing was that while everything else was so different from Nepal, the people you saw on the street weren’t all that different. I had read beforehand that only about 20% of the people living in Dubai are Arabs and the rest are expats/immigrants and you can really see it. First of all I saw very few women apart from Western tourists and a few Asian ladies (we saw maybe three or four women covered in burkhas) but in the metro and on the streets the vast majority of people were Indian or Nepalese looking men or other Asian, very few Arab men.
It was a very quick visit but personally I think it was enough for us. Dubai is not really a destination that would interest me so greatly and also this time we basically went there just to change the plane. It was interesting to see it but I don’t really like these artificial places where there is nothing real or natural to see.
Next stop: Sydney, Australia, mate!
