Vinkkejä Maltan matkaajille Osa 1: Kulkuvälineistä - Tips for Visitors to Malta Part 1: Transportation

I stole the idea from another couchsurfer's profile - I decided to make a post (edit: a series of posts) where I collect some recommendations, practical tips etc. for our couchsurfers and other visitors to our little island.

So originally I started this with the idea of making one post on the whole topic. When I started writing I realized that with my tendency to ramble on and on, that one post would become a novel (or rather, a guidebook). Therefore I decided to divide the information to several posts, first of which tackles the topic of transportation in Malta.

Miten päästä ympäri saarta?

Älä anna Maltan pienen koon hämätä - paikasta toiseen pääseminen voi silti kestää iäisyyksiä, vaikkei välimatkaa ehkä linnuntietä olisi kuin muutama kilometri. Tässä omia kokemuksia/mielipiteitä/tietoa paikasta toiseen pääsemisestä.

How to get around the Island?

Don't let Malta's small size fool you - it can still take eons to get from one place to another even if the distance, as the crow flies, would only be a couple of miles. Please see below my experiences/opinions/information on how to get around in Malta.

Bussi

The new bus fleet

It could happen to you - the frustrated would-be passengers being passed by the already full bus

Bus

The bus service in Malta certainly receives mixed reviews. Majority of people living here consider the service abysmal and sure, it has its faults, but on the other hand the buses can get you almost anywhere on the island and it is a very cheap way of getting around. If you are here for a week and you are planning to use the buses a lot, the best thing is to buy the one-week Explorer ticket right away at the airport for 21€. With this ticket you get unlimited travel for a week. Another option is to buy 12 journeys for the price of 15€ which you can also share with your travel mate. You cannot buy these tickets from the driver, only the single ticket (1,5€ in the winter or 2€ in the summertime) so it works out a lot cheaper than buying single tickets if you are travelling a lot.

The downside of public transport in Malta is that it takes absolutely ages to get anywhere with the bus going around all sorts of villages and the timetables you might see printed at bus stops have nothing to do with the reality. Be prepared to spend minimum 1,5 hours on the way from Bugibba in the north part of the island to Valletta and also bear in mind you might spend a considerable length of time waiting at the bus stop, no matter what the time table says. The buses headed for the most popular destinations are also often completely packed and at worst times they won't even pick new passengers up anymore, so there you stay at the stop, sweating and swearing while the bus drives past in its rally-car-like manner. So, it takes time and patience to travel by buses but it is the economical (and ecological!) option!
You can check the (theoretical) timetables and use (the not amazingly reliable) journey planner here.

If your flight is too late/early for buses, you can book a handy airport transfer online. We have used Zarb Coaches several times and it has worked out well. If you choose the cheaper option of shared transfer you might have company in the car, but usually it's just been the two of us and the price for door-to-door transfer is 4€ (depending of course on the length of the trip).

This company is apparently no longer operating, unfortunately

Autonvuokraus

Renting a Car

If you end up renting a car, it will of course make getting around considerably easier. The only experience we have of car rental in Malta is Gold Car which I cannot recommend - the rental itself was really cheap but they require an extortionate deposit of 1350€ which they still (one month later) have not refunded to us. I have no experience of the other car rentals in here but there are many. Driving in Malta also requires nerves of steel as the traffic is notorious for a good reason - way too many cars crammed onto a small island, narrow roads that are at places in a terrible condition, fellow drivers whose driving habits make you question their sanity, not to mention the desperate lack of adequate parking. There doesn't seem to be much investment in signage (I guess they assume everyone knows where they are going anyway) so you are pretty guaranteed to get lost. Oh, and if you are not used to driving on the left, that will add some more excitement to the mix as well. Living on the edge!

Taksi

Taxi

I am usually too cheap to take taxies (unless I am in a lot cheaper country) so I nearly forgot to add the info about the taxies in Malta. Here it is not a good idea to hail a white taxi down on a street, even though they are the "official" taxies - they are notorious for not using meters and commonly ask for absolutely extortionate prices for a few kilometre's journey. The only time we ever had to take a taxi in here was when we were on our way to a job interview and the bus was nowhere to be seen. The driver pretended to be deaf when I enquired whether he has a meter and asked nicely for 20€ for a journey that couldn't have been more than 4 kilometres. We managed to get it down to 15€ which was still surely at least double what it should have been but we didn't have time for more arguing before the interview. Unfortunately I forgot to warn my brother and sister-in-law when they visited Malta and they ended up paying 40€ for a trip that I estimate to be about 6km. If you do need a taxi I would recommend for instance Hi Cabs or E-Cabs which you book by phone or in a special booking office (especially in Paceville). They have set prices which I still consider pretty expensive compared to general price level in Malta but at least you are not screwed over.

Ferry from Sliema to Valletta

Lautta

Ferry

If you happen to stay for instance in Sliema and you want to visit Valletta, a faster and more pleasant way than taking the bus is to hop on a ferry at Sliema Ferries. The ticket will only set you back 1,5€ and the ferries run every half an hour. I must admit I have not taken this ferry myself but heard from others it works well. From Valletta you can also take another ferry to the Three Cities area (more on which in my next post about my favourite places in Malta), the same price and frequency than the Sliema-Valletta ferry.
