Vinkkejä Maltan matkaajille osa 3: Luontokohteita - Tips for Visitors to Malta Part 3: Nature Sights in Malta

Although Malta has loads of historical and cultural sights, some of the (in my opinion) most stunning things to see here are all natural. Sure, it's a very arid overcrowded island with little in the way of vegetation and lots of concrete, but the coast line is just stunning.

Kuten mainittu aiemmin julkisen liikenteen postauksessa, näihin upeisiin maisemiin pääseminen ilman autoa vaatii paljon aikaa ja kärsivällisyyttä, mutta on kyllä sen vaivan arvoista. Suurin osa turisteista suuntaa Siniseen Luolaan eli Blue Grottoon, mikä on todellakin käymisen arvoinen.

Luzzu ready to take you to a wonderful world

As discussed in the transport post, it takes a long time to get to any of these stunning places if you don't have a car but it's well worth it. Where most tourists head is the Blue Grotto which is well worth a visit. For a long time we didn't go, partly because we figured it's a very touristy thing to do but don't let that bother you - the grotto is absolutely stunning! You can take one of the little boat trips at EUR8.00 per person and according to the ticket, you will soon "find yourself in a wonderful world". It is indeed a wonderful world with awe-inspiring views of the cliffs and water so blue, it's surreal.

From there you can continue with relative ease to Dingli Cliffs. When I say "ease", there is a bus going from Blue Grotto area towards Dingli cliffs but it's rather erratic at best. Be prepared to wait for ages both at the Blue Grotto and then again at the cliffs, from where I suggest you continue to Rabat (there you will have good bus connections to several places on the island). Cliffs are at their best at sunset but offer great views at any time.

Living on the edge!

If you enjoy a good hike, head to Il-Majjistral Natural Reserve. I always thought you need mountains and forests for a nice hike experience, but Malta's rugged coast line proved me wrong. No, you won't find trees or much else in the way of vegetation but the views are amazing. It's not easy to determine where the hike starts from as it is a tiny non-descriptive path right next to the Radisson SAS hotel at Golden Bay but once you get past the hotel you can walk all the way until the Popeye Village which also makes great pictures with its colourful crooked houses. It's a fair walk, for us it took about 3 hours (at a slow pace with lots of photo stops) and then you need to make your way back again for the bus. It makes a lovely day out but be prepared with water and snacks as along the hike there is absolutely nothing to buy after you leave the Golden Bay.

There is SOME vegetation, see?

If you don't feel like doing a big hike but would like to enjoy nice views from Golden Bay, you can also head to the opposite direction towards Ghajn Tuffieha Bay which has several small sandy beaches one after another as the way there will reward you with lovely views. Bear in mind that one of the beaches is "clothing optional"-kind of beach so you might see more of some sun bathers that you would like to.
