Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend

Me satuimme valitsemaan Ken’s Toursin, mutta naapurissa sijaitseva Dixie tarjoaa tosiaan juuri samaa settiä. Vaikka retken on varannut tietylle ajankohdalle, silti joutuu todennäköisesti jonottamaan kanjonin sisäänkäynnillä puolesta tunnista pariinkin tuntiin, mikä kannattaa ottaa huomioon päivän muita ohjelmia suunnitellessa.
Canyon from above

I might have mentioned already that we are seeing quite a few canyons on this trip. However, all of them have been very different from one another and they offer totally distinctive views and experiences, so we hadn’t gotten tired of canyons yet. We still had one more to see, the Antelope Canyon close to the border of Arizona and Utah. The special thing about this canyon are the fascinating walls eroded by wind and water that look deceptively like paintings. You can visit either the Upper or Lower Canyon, the latter being somewhat cheaper and slightly more demanding physically, while the Upper Canyon is fully accessible. We chose the Lower Canyon which you can only visit with a guided walking tour of about one hour. There are two companies offering exactly the same trips at exactly the same price (25 USD per person plus 8 USD Navajo Permit fee) - in fact the companies are owned by a brother and sister, so presumably they wouldn’t want to try and force each other out of business. We happened to choose Ken’s Tours but Dixie next door offers exactly the same stuff. The canyon is located on Navajo land and both owners as well as all the staff are Navajos. There are trips going all the time, so even though there are lots of people, it is not so necessary to book well in advance - there would have still been trips available for the same day. Even if you book the tour for a certain time, you will most likely have to queue up at the entrance of the canyon any time between half an hour and two hours at busy times, which is good to keep in mind when planning other activities for the rest of the day.
Not recommended for claustrophobic people!

Although in the beginning it felt like there were way too many people in the tight narrow canyon, the crowd quickly dispersed along the canyon and it was easy taking pictures without any photobombers. And man, what amazing pictures you could get! The canyon walls were just indescribably beautiful, the mesmerizing wave-like patterns in different shades of pink and peach. Wherever you turned your head you saw more incredible rock formations and there was no way to stop taking pictures. I was really happy that we made the time to visit this one more canyon, I wouldn’t have wanted to miss any of them!

Kun kerran oltiin niillä tienoilla, piti käydä myös katsomassa Horseshoe Bendiä, kohtaa, jossa Colorado-joki tekee dramaattisen hevosenkengänmuotoisen käännöksen jyrkän kallion ympäri. Valtatien varressa muutaman minuutin ajomatkan päässä Pagen kaupungista on iso parkkipaikka, josta yllättävää kyllä joutuu kävelemään soratietä pitkin muutaman minuutin verran näköalapaikalle.

As we were in the neighbourhood, we wanted to see also the Horseshoe Bend, where Colorado River makes its dramatic bend around a sheer cliff. Along the highway, a few minutes’ drive out of Page you will find a large parking lot, from where surprisingly enough you have to walk a good few minutes along a dirt path to see the view point. Being in the US, I would have expected that they have at least built a paved road to such a popular tourist sight, preferably with a parking lot right next to the view point, so that you wouldn’t - God forbid - have to make any sort of physical effort to see the sight. At least in the beginning of the path there were large signs warning you about just how dangerous it is to walk  in the desert and listing all the necessities you should bring for this (a few minutes’) hike. I must say the view is well worth sweating though! On this trip we have enjoyed such a variety of awesome natural sights and also Horseshoe Bend made it on my “most amazing landscapes ever seen” list.

Näistä maisemista keskellä Utahin erämaata ajelimmekin sitten takaisin Las Vegasiin ja heitimme siellä vielä pikkurundin Grand Canyonin yllä (siitä kerroin edellisessä postauksessa). Sitten kanjonit riittivät vähäksi aikaa ja suuntasimme Karibian maisemiin!

From these sceneries in the middle of Utah desert we drove back to Las Vegas, where we had another go at the Grand Canyon by plane (I covered that in the previous post). That was enough of canyons for a while and time to head to the Caribbean!
